We are so excited after finishing up our second trail ride with Asheville Vehicle Outfitters, we visited Windrock OHV park for an awesome weekend of wheeling while camping at Half Moon Campground. Joining us as our guide was Billy Ross from Bold Overland with his amazing 3rd gen Tacoma.
Sarah and I arrived at Half Moon Campground around 6 pm Friday evening, immediately we were greeted by the campground owners who were more than helpful and welcoming to us. Given the number of vehicles we had attending the ride we chose to rent several RV camp sites so we could group up closer together throughout the weekend, the campground also offers cabins and primitive campsites to accommodate all types of campers. After meeting the campground owners we met with Eric and Bobby from AVO to discuss the plan for the trailride. Billy Ross from Bold Overland spent most of Friday route planning and running the trails to ensure we had a clear path for an enjoyable trail ride, he was able to put together an awesome route that would provide great learning opportunities for all of the participants. We had a cool mix of Toyota platforms join us with everything from a 1985 4runner to several 200 series LandCruisers.
Saturday morning was cold and windy but that didn’t stop everyone from getting up early to be at our drivers meeting and being excited about our trail ride, we met up with Billy at the Windrock General Store to purchase our passes. After a brief lecture on traction control systems and basic driving mechanics we hit the trail. With all of the rain and slightly warmer temps the trails were a muddy mess throughout the day forcing you to to take harder lines sometimes but all of the vehicles/drivers did amazing. We ended up with a flat tire on the tried and true 80 series LandCruiser, but other than that there was no damage all day long! With great driving we were able to navigate the muddy rough terrain and perform zero recoveries all day. Billy took us up to the overlook for lunch where we took our group photo, a clear day provided a breathtaking view for miles. Heading back down to the general store we got to see a group of downhill mountain bikers racing through the trees on Windrock’s downhill course. While my mind says let’s do it my body keeps telling me I don’t bounce anymore!
We arrived back at Half Moon Campground Saturday evening and started hunkering down because the temps were dropping quick as the sun went down. Even with the colder temps everyone gathered around to talk about the days experience and when would we be doing it again!
